CUPERTINO RESIDENT LETTER

RE:  Cupertino residents oppose the Bayside Visual Approach (BVA) flight path

Dear FAA Officials,

My name is ___________________________________, and I live in Cupertino, CA.

As a resident of Cupertino, we strongly oppose the Bayside Visual Approach (BVA).  This flight path should NOT be permanently established, since this new path has long term consequences for Cupertino.

Before the BVA flight path, many SurfAir flights did NOT regularly fly over Cupertino airspace.

In contrast, when using the new BVA flight path, nearly 100% of the SurfAir planes now fly directly over Cupertino. With the establishment of BVA, there will be a large increase in both SurfAir and other San Carlos arriving flights over Cupertino.

Shifts airplane noise from the peninsula & establishes a major flight path over Cupertino:

San Mateo County is attempting to shift their airplane noise over to Cupertino and Sunnyvale.  If the Bayside Visual Approach (BVA) is established as a published FAA flight path, this will create a MAJOR bay area flight corridor over heavily populated Cupertino.  This should NOT be allowed.  Cupertino has a population of over 60,000 residents, and should not be disregarded in this matter.   Because this San Carlos airport flight path passes directly over Cupertino, our city is impacted by the newly proposed BVA flight path.

Cupertino has no jurisdictional control over San Carlos Airport- Likely resulting in future uncontrolled airport growth:

Cupertino has no government control over the San Carlos airport; In contrast, San Mateo County owns San Carlos Airport, meaning San Mateo County residents have direct control regarding the growth and expansion of the San Carlos airport.  If the airplane noise is effectively moved from the residents of San Mateo County, then San Carlos airport will likely be allowed to grow unchecked without constraint.  In the coming years, this unconstrained growth would eventually result in hundreds of daily San Carlos Airport flights over the city of Cupertino.  This will have major impact on our Cupertino community and the residents under this newly proposed flight path.

Flight path will be flown by anyone, not just SurfAir:

FAA has informed residents that this newly proposed BVA path “will be flown in visual flight rules (VFR) by ANYONE, including SurfAir.”  Making this flight path permanent means that ALL San Carlos airport arriving flights could use this path, not just SurfAir.  San Carlos airport currently has a large number of daily arriving flights, and is growing rapidly.  For various reasons cited above in this letter, establishing this flight path as a permanently published BVA path would ultimately result in hundreds of daily flights being shifted from the peninsula over to Cupertino and Sunnyvale.  This shifting of airplane noise is completely unacceptable.

These planes are loud turbo prop planes & other small planes that seriously impact the quality of life in Cupertino

When we moved to Cupertino, we made decisions based on the existing flight paths in the area.  Now flight paths that have been in existence for many years over the peninsula cities are being shifted over Sunnyvale and Cupertino.  This is not fair, and it is not right!  We are already subjected to airplane noise from San Jose airport, Moffett, San Francisco, Palo Alto, and other airports, and we should not have to shoulder more bay area flights.

Plainly, the impact of FAA publishing this BVA flight path would have a significant impact to our entire Cupertino community.  San Mateo County is attempting to relieve THEIR peninsula residents of airplane noise, at the expense of Cupertino residents. There should be NO Bayside Visual Approach!  No moving of airplane noise from the peninsula cities to Cupertino and Sunnyvale!

Sincerely,
